La peste de 1586 et de 1643 fit de nombreuses victimes à la Tour en Jarez.
On enterrait les morts à Montreynaud. Dans un testament du 15 octobre 1586, dicté par la fenêtre au notaire qui se tenait devant la maison, Julienne Martin, femme de François Perrotin, atteinte du mal contagieux, lègue une rente pour une messe qui doit être célébrée par les prêtres de la Tour, tous les ans, le jour de la fête des Trépassés, après la Toussaint, au lieu du cimetière de Montrenost si on y édifie une chapelle.
Ce testament prouve qu'on avait alors le projet de bâtir une chapelle à "Montrenost". C'est probablement l'origine de la chapelle de Saint-Roch au lieu du Gas en bas de Montreynaud. Elle ne fut bâtie pourtant que bien plus tard, peut-être à l'occasion de la peste de 1643. En tout cas elle existait en 1666, car on trouve à cette date la fondation d'une messe annuelle à la fête de Sainte-Anne en la chapelle de Saint-Roch( protecteur des pestiférés).
Après l'épidémie de 1624 à 1629, les paroissiens de la Tour avaient émis le vœu d'ériger une croix pour attirer la clémence divine lorsque les épidémies se déclaraient, les mourants eux-mêmes le demandaient pour les vivants. C'est ainsi que Julienne martin faisait inscrire ce désir dans son testament. Mais ce vœu ne fut exaucé qu'en 1658, à la suite de l'épidémie qui avait débuté en 1643. la croix érigée au carrefour "La malardière", au pied de la Tour, sur la route nationale N°498, a porté pendant trois cents ans l'inscription suivante: "Ici s'est arrêtée la peste en 1658". En 1850 un paroissien de la Tour, Monsieur Paillon-Peyret avait pris à ses frais la restauration de cette croix. L’inscription disparut hélas lors de l'aménagement du carrefour.
En 1654, la mortalité fut très grande à La Tour. Les décès s'élevèrent à 126 au lieu de 15 (moyenne d'alors). C'était l'époque de la misère et de la famine. Le pays de Jarez fut ravagé en même temps par la guerre, la famine et la peste .

The plague of 1586 and 1643 caused many victims in the Tour Jarez.
They were burying the dead Montreynaud. After the epidemic from 1624 to 1629, the parishioners of the Tower had hoped to erect a cross to draw divine mercy when outbreaks are reported, the dying themselves asked for the living. Thus Julian Martin was put this desire in his will. But this wish was fulfilled in 1658, following the outbreak which began in 1643. the cross erected at the crossroads "The malardière, at the foot of the Tower, on the national highway No. 498, has worn for three hundred years the following inscription:" Here stopped the plague in 1658. In 1850 a parishioner of the Tower, Mr. Paillon-Peyret had taken at its expense restore the cross. Registration unfortunately disappeared during the development of the intersection.
In 1654, the mortality was very high at the Tour. Deaths rose to 126 instead of 15 (average time). It was the era of misery and starvation. The country was ravaged Jarez together by war, famine and plague
