Start your engines for the Race to 2010! In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in America
Long Description:
Start your engines for the Race to 2010! In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in America, we are showcasing one of the most popular activities for Cub Scouts — and a true Scouting icon — the Pinewood Derby.
Pinewood Derby cars will race across America using geocaching. The cars will be Travel Bugs®, moving from cache to cache. The finish line? Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree! All of the Pinewood Derby cars that arrive at the Jamboree will be displayed in a special geocaching area in Technology Quest. After the Jamboree, the cars will be released to continue their race … around the world.
The official start of the race is March 6. To give all of the racers in the Atlanta Area a common starting point, anyone wishing to participate can come to the Volunteer Service Center to begin the race. Whether you are a Scout or not, everyone is invited to participate. The race is open to anyone who wants to enter a pinewood derby car: Scouts and non-Scouts, boys and girls, kids and not-so-kids. Stop by at 3:00, run your car down our track and log your start. A limited number of unregistered Travel Bugs® tags may be available, but it would be best to plan ahead and bring your own.
The event is informal. It is an opportunity to meet and socialize with new and experienced geocachers. Training, demonstrations, temporary caches and maybe a geo-scavenger hunt are planned for new cachers. More experienced cachers can cheer on your favorite car, join the scavenger hunt, meet other geocachers and search for many fine caches in the area. Come join us for a kick-off of the Get in the Game, Race to 2010 and to celebrate 100 years of Scouting.
This event is part of the Get In The Game program, a collaborative effort of the Boy Scouts of America and Geocaching.com, a Groundspeak project.
