Geocache Description:

This is a Traditional Cache located in the middle of Gayton village. Terrain is very easy with the cache being located near to public pavements. The Cache itself is a small clip-top plastic container, easily found. Be sure to keep an eye open though as caches are overlooked by the enemy muggles
Car Parking is available near either of the pubs, or outside the Fish and Chip shop along the main road.

Located in the small village of Gayton this is the third of three caches all about Historic Gayton.
This particular cache is located just a short distance away from the old Lime Kiln. Although it has been speculated that there was more than one.

Much has been said about the Lime Kilns in the section about Gayton’s History when until recent times a kiln could be found on every farm in Gayton. However a commercial undertaking had been in operation for the manufacture of lime on a large scale right up to its cessation in the late 1960’s by the last tenants,W.E.Boon & Sons Ltd. The quicklime was used mainly for agricultural purposes for applying to the land to neutralise soil acidity, for making lime mortar in the building trade and whitewashing the walls of buildings. Lime kilns are similar to large pottery kilns but have a conical hopper inside in which the chalk is fed and heated to a high temperature by burning coke. When the process is complete the lime is raked out fromapertures in the base of the hopper. Generally speaking 100 tons of chalk generates 40% quicklime giving off 60% as waste gas and water (hence the old wives’ tale that this gas made Gayton a healthy place by destroying airborne diseases!).

I hope you enjoy this one of three caches i have placed in Gayton and please be sure to visite my website www.geocache-hunters.com for information on everything from Geocaching to Archaeology. Be sure to send any photos of you during your caching.
