Geocache Description:

The regional nature reserve of Val Rosandra ( Dolina Glinšcice) is a valley centered on the river with the same name (Slovene: Glinšcice) between the city of Trieste and the border with Slovenia.
At the heart of the valley flows the river Rosandra/ Glinšcice. It is a rarity in the Karst that a river flows in the surface!
The valley developed due to the erosion, which was caused by the surface water of this river. Near the small loction Bottazzo the river forms here a high waterfall, which makes the transition of the water-permeable rock on the mountain to the water-impermeable layer in the valley reveal.
The mountain walls of the valley are geologicaly very different: the nordeastery mountainside is sunny and mild, the steep walls from Flysch. The southwestery wall is shady and windy with big scree material.
If you go to the header coords you will find a phantastic view point. On one side you'll see the valley,

on the other side the estuary to adriatic sea.

The best time to visit ValRosandra is the summer, or on hot days of spring and autumn, when you can swim in the fresh water of the river. But a visit in winter, when the Bora is blowing from the Karst, is an adventure (when you're hard enough…) On weekends the Val Rosandra is very well visited so it is not easy to find a parking place for the car! To visit the valley ist only possible by feet or by bycicle!!! Starting from the main square of Bagnoli / Boljunec you have two paths: the main path that leads directly to Botazzo and from which you can reach the remains of a Roman aqueduct, and the Church of Santa Maria in Siaris. From San Giuseppe della Chiusa / Ricmanje a bike way runs through the village of Sant'Antonio in Bosco / Boršt and reaches the village of Botazzo (this is a former railway). In Bagnoli is the Val Rosandra Visitor Center (tel. +39 040 8326435). Here you will find all the information needed to discover the valley. The center is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 8.30 to -11.30 and from 14.30 to 17.30

Highlights:
Botazzo /Botac: small village at the end of the path, there are a couple of houses, a restaurant and the former crossing point with Slovenia.
Remains of a Roman aqueduct back to the first century in the first part of the trail. The aqueduct reaches the center of Trieste after 14 km.
Church of Santa Maria in Siaris which can be reached from the south side.
Waterfall : During very cold winters it is possible that the waterfall is frozen.
Way of the former railroad - now transformed into a bike path.

Comici monument: The memorial commemorates the strongest climber of his era Emilio Comici, (* 21. Februar 1901 in Triest; † 19. Oktober 1940) which was the best instructor of the climbing group from Trieste who had their climbing gym in Val Rosandra. He was mayor in Selva Val Gardena and here he died after falling from a rock while he was helping someone in trouble . (Our thank to “albertomr” from Trentino for the correction and information!) The monument is located near the church of Santa Maria in Siaris.
Castle Mocca: from which you can only see the ruins. In the Middle Ages it was used to control a Salt Road from the salines close to the Adriatic.

The valley is populated by many species of animals, but the only poisonous snake is the Horn viper. Following the tourist trail is rare to meet the viper...
