Geocache Description:

Bison tube near highway.

Conant (named for James P Conant, an early rancher) was the first name of this community; it was settled in 1901 when the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific RR line came through. This settlement was later called Casa Colorado, and finally Newkirk by a settler from Newkirk, OK.

From “The Place Names of New Mexico” Revised Edition, by Robert Julyan
