This area was named because of all the fight that took place so long ago.... But as you will see the red ground agains the green trees also support the name...
there is a old copper mine a little ways away....far down the road pass the cache there is a hot spring that very few people ever visit called sheep Crossing Hot springs. (see attached map) there is now a cache GC466C in the area of the hot springs (NOTE this is not the Verde Hot Springs)
Back by the verde river you will also find colorfull agate, jasper and sagenite. The agate and jasper is found through out the hills on both sides of the river, especially on the east side. The sagenite seems to be concentrated on top of the msa just north of forest road 269
I was going to place the cache at sheep crossing but not knowing how many people could get there cars back that far I placed it at the begining. I hope that you will that the time to explore the area....
This can be access by car in good weather.
