Geocache Description:

Ludwig van Beethoven, arguably the most genius classical
composer of all time, lived about 200 years ago. His music is still
played in concert halls around the world today and is regularly
performed in the venue at the given coordinates.

In order to find the coordinates of the actual cache, you have to acquaint yourself with some of his music and answer the questions below. All sound snippets are available on Youtube, search for "GC23F8M Question 1...8"

Question1:

this is the famous theme of Beethoven's symphony number ?

Question 2:

All of Beethoven's Overtures end in a glorious finale, usually with some loud thundering chords. Except one overture, which ends quietly. Which Opus number is it? Add the two digits together.

Question 3:

Beethoven has some humorous moments in his scores too. In this example, he jokingly lets the horn play the theme 'at the wrong time', in a quiet violin moment, four bars before the orchestra recapitulates the same tune. Legend has it that during the first rehearsal to this symphony, a close friend of Beethoven sat besides him and when 'the funny moment' came, he didn't get the joke and exclaimed: "that bloody horn player! Can't he count? It sounds terrible!" Apparently the composer was not amused by his joke stalling. In the first movement of which symphony do you hear this joke?

Question 4:

Beethoven was way ahead of his time and he pioneered many musical ideas. For example, in a live concert of pop music, nowadays the drummer usually counts in the beat by clicking his sticks together and counting 'ah one - two - three - four!" Did you know Beethoven started this habit? He was a bit more subtle about it and didn't have the drummer count out loud and click his sticks, but instead he had the drummer play four beats alone just before the piece starts, setting the pace for the entire movement. Which key is this piece in? Use the numerical value of the letter.

Question 5:

Beethoven mostly wrote "absolute music", which stands for itself. By contrast "program music" is intended to evoke extra-musical ideas in the mind of the listener by musically representing a scene, image or mood. Only one of his symphonies is programmatic, and in one its movements he depicts a thunderstorm, lightning and all. Take the number of the symphony and deduct the number of the movement.

Question 6:

Beethoven's symphonies usually include a movement that is called a 'Scherzo'. Derived from the German word 'Scherz' for 'joke', these musical pieces are mostly fast and lively with a tongue-in-cheek kind of humour to it. What time signature do these Scherzos have? Add the two numbers together.

Question 7:

In its original form, an Overture serves as a curtain-raiser to an Opera. It has the best tunes of the opera 're-mixed' and sets the mood for the story to follow. Beethoven composed only one opera, but he ended up writing four overtures to it! The final version has no melodies whatsoever of the actual opera to follow. Which Overture is this sound-snippet of?

Question 8:

Beethoven's most famous work is probably his last symphony, the ninth. The famous tune of its last movement "Freude schöner Götterfunken", became the official anthem of the European Union. It is his only symphony that includes a choir and vocal soloists. It is also the only symphony that includes percussion instruments other than timpani. In the last movement he mimics the sound of a Turkish marching band. In the sound file, how many percussion instruments can you hear clearly - unlike Beethoven who was completely deaf by the time he composed it?

The cache is placed at a venue where his music has probably been played too.
