Third of 6 (including a BONUS) This cache series will take you along Varteg and The Balance Circular walk towards Cwmavon, through woodland and emerging onto Varteg and returning via the Balance.
The walk will take you along the Viaduct, through Pen-y-lan wood; past the Old Jackdaw Quarry; through the now abandoned Varteg railway station; through a mature beech woodland, across Vipond's Top Pits; Past the ruins of the Lighthouse.
All caches may be completed as part of the series or independantly. For the bonus you will need to collect a clue from each of the caches to be able to work out the bonus cache co-ordinates.
Cache details: Small tupperware container with log book, pencil and usual small swaps
To enter the Beech woodland area walk you will need to turn left up the track into the wooded area at the second set of gates, follow the path.
To exit the wooded area: Follow the track as it climbs through the woodland. After about 50 yards out of the wood the path bears left uphill near a stone wall. Above the wall you will come to a bigger track. Follow this left beneath the power lines and follow up to a disused rail line. Turn left and follow until it emerges onto the road.
The circular walk is on well defined footpaths, some of which may be unsuitable for strollers and wheelchairs (please refer to attributes designated for each individual cache for details).
