The Alloa Waggonway
The Alloa Waggonway was the earliest form of railway in Clackmannanshire, originally built in 1768 for the Earl of Mar as a wooden waggon way using Scotch fir for rails to transport coal from his Alloa mines to Alloa harbour. The wooden rails were replaced with cast iron rails in 1810. The line was several miles long and was single track with frequent passing loops, with all traffic being worked by horses or gravity.
Very little of the Alloa Waggonway has survived into the 21st century, but at the Alloa end there are two sections of the route that have survived as part of local footpaths.
The cache is placed at the top end of the most obvious section where there is an information board about the Way and an example of one of the wagons. This path section goes all the way down to the Council offices at Lime Tree House, where there is another wagon. The path stops here as the glass works were built between here and the harbour. However, you can still visit the harbour which has other information boards etc.
Cache is near a busy road but there is parking nearby.
Please replace carefully - thanks.
***Congrats to geezagoal for F.T.F.***
