Greenfield House 1892-94
The woollen mills of the Paton family in Alloa, Clackmannan and Tillicoultry had a great influence on the industrial history of Clackmannanshire. Their sense of civic responsibility also gave Alloa some of its grand public buildings and their impressive family homes have nearly all survived.
Greenfield House was designed by the Edinburgh architects A G Sydney Mitchell & Wilson for David Paton Thomson. It was elegantly furnished and housed a considerable art collection. The original architects reconstructed and extended the house after a severe fire in 1914. David Paton Thomson died in 1917 and in his will instructed that his wife should live in the house until her death, after which it must be sold.
Jane Thomson died in 1951 and in 1952 the house was purchased by Alloa Burgh Council. Greenfield House was now the headquarters of Clackmannanshire Council up until June 2014 (now Kilncraigs - a renovated mill elsewhere in Alloa). In spite of the changed use, many of the original fittings of the house, including splendid stained glass, plasterwork and wood panelling, have survived.
The House is situated within the grounds of Greenfield Public Park and so access is available at all times.
Please note though that Greenfield House is no longer the operational HQ of Clackmannanshire Council - however it has been sold and will be developed. Nevertheless, the cache is still in a grassy public park area which will remain as such and can be accessed from the public path in the park but stealth will still be required. There is adequate parking and two good playparks within a couple of hundred yards. Kids will love them!
