Grinding Ahead Traditional Cache
HarborSpy: Restoration work has begun on the historic mill, so I need to archive the cache. Hopefully, I can place a new cache here when the work is finished.

The centerpiece of this historic site is reputed to be a “last of its kind.” (Being something of a specialist in these things, I disagree, but… I digress!)
Built in 1852, the gristmill located in this collection of historic buildings was originally the property of William Head. Used for decades, the mill reportedly ginned cotton and milled rough timber into boards in addition to serving its primary purpose: to process grain. Records indicate the mill was remodeled during the Great Depression (1930s.) The water wheel, originally made of wood, was replaced at that time by the steel wheel you can see today.
The mill was refurbished for use as an antique store after being purchased by the Healan family (1960s.). Additionally, the late Burnice Healan worked diligently to earn the mill acknowledgement in the National Register of Historic Places (1990.) Called by its original name of Head’s Mill by some, others will always think of this structure as Healan’s Mill in honor of her work to preserve this piece of history.
The site is now the property of Hall County. Until the Head’s Mill Historic Preservation Trust is able to fully restore the mill and the surrounding structures, this collection of historic buildings will remain quietly waiting by this gravel road along the North Oconee River.
Please, limit visits to daylight hours only. Also, please keep to the public area and respect the fence boundary protecting the site.
The cache container is a ‘nano, en camouflage.’
I had placed a wee Harbor charm in the cache as a FTF token in honor of this one being my first cache placed...congratulations to the son of WakeboardLanier for taking this one!
CONGRATULATIONS to WakeboardLanier for the FTF.
