Geocache Description:

Congratulations to Mcgeester for the FTF!!!

You might be like myself, having driven past this site hundreds of times without taking the time to stop and see what is here. When you arrive at the posted coordinates you will find an informational sign about the 12th Street Bioswale. So, what is a bioswale? I asked myself the same question when I first came across this site in the heart of South Salem.

A bioswale is a landscape element that is installed in order to help filter water runoff. It is designed to filter out silt and pollution from water runoff before it reaches a watershed or storm sewer. The picture below will help explain the filtration process that the runoff water goes through. The City of Salem constructed this bioswale along 12th street, between Madrona and Commercial, in 2007. The city is currently looking at building more of these in the future to help filter the water runoff from different communities as the water heads towards our local creeks.

In order to log this Earthcache you must go to the listed coordinates and email me the answers to the following questions. Here you will find a sign that includes the picture above as well as specific details pertaining to this bioswale. Please do not post your answers with your log. If you do so it will be deleted.

1. What is the purpose of the 12th Street Bioswale?
2. How long is the 12th Street Bioswale (in feet)?
3. Where will this filtered water runoff go to next?
4. What is one native plant used in the filtration process?
5. How many legs are holding up the sign?

Bonus: Post a picture of yourself in front of the bioswale. This can be accomplished from the curb. Please do not damage any of the vegetation.

***Please note*** Parking is not available at the posted coordinates. You will need to park along one of the nearby side streets and walk to this location.
