Geocache Description:

Ground Hog Day continues my series of holiday themed caches, while not a traditional holiday, it is a fun day of observance where we determine how much time is left for winter. The cache is a small container with only a log book, TB coins will fit if you have any. Bring your own pen. Parking for cache is at the Pitcher Mountain Fire Tower lot off from Rt 123. It is an easy and fun walk for the family. Bring your camera and you might spot a wild beast along the way.

The trails you will hike as you do this cache are multi-use and are for all to enjoy. Please observe posted signs, park in designated areas and do block gates. In the fall, feel free to pick wild blueberries (just over 1 mile from the cache location) and payment is on the honor system (details posted during the season). There are many trails that branch off and go many directions, including to the fire tower on Pitcher Mountain. Enjoy!

As in my other caches in the 'holiday' series, I have presented a short history or fun fact about the holiday. While Ground Hog Day is not a true holiday, I thought it would be fun to include this day in my series. Here is the tail of Punxsutawney Phil.

Howdy there friend, my name is Punxsutawney Phil – you can just call me Phil. I have a little tale to share with you about myself and a historic tradition that takes place each year in early February. At this time of year, the first snow falls have come, the holiday season is well gone by and we are deeply entrenched in the heart of winter. Folks are getting warn thin with the bitter cold, breaking their backs shoveling the snow, digging the car out after a snow, and skidding down the interstate on their way to work. It is now, that folks are starting to look for the signs of spring and warmer days.

While folks are scampering about and fighting the winter blues, I am hunkered down, deep inside my borough at my home in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. You see, I am the famous ground hog that pops up in early February to give the prediction on how much longer the winter will be with us. On Ground Hog day, February 2nd, I come out of my hole to see if I can chase my shadow or at least see it. If I see my shadow, I head back into my borough to wait out another six weeks of bad winter weather. However, if it is cloudy and I do not see my shadow, then I stay out and play, as it is a sign that spring is right around the corner.

Ground Hog day is a popular tradition in the United States as tens of thousands of folks from all over the world, will come to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutwawney to await my appearance. I would invite you to read about the history of this day on my web site www.groundhog.org. You will also find links to various other sites of interest to the Ground Hog Day community and all of the events that surround my special day.
