Geocache Description:

The ruins of the house you see here are the last occupied dwelling in the Glen. The last residents vacated Jerah in the1960s when it was the only remaining occupied farmhouse in the Glen and it had been so for possibly a century. The cache is not in the main building and is a small clip top container with room for several small objects.

The ruins at Jerah

The area of land called Jerah was originally owned by the Cistercian monks from Culross in medieval times and it is believed that a farm house would have been here as the focus of their cultivation of the land and their flocks of sheep. The dilapidated building you see here dates from the mid c19th and probably represents a rebuild consistent with its sole status. The gables of the two storey building are still standing (but rickety so take care exploring the ruins) but the side walls have fallen in. Fireplaces are visible on both floors and extensions are visible on several sides. There is a garden enclosure to the front of the house and various barns and hen houses are visible. A sheep dip of concrete construction lies to the North of the house and a concrete plinth in the same area was thought to be the base for kennels both added in c20th.

It’s a sad sight nowadays but while you look for the cache here think about the good times to be had by its residents. The balmy sunny nights sitting out on the garden after a days work watching the sun set over to the West, the Yule log on the fire as the hatches are battened for a snowed in Christmas in a magic white Glen with food, warmth and the family together.

There was previously a cache at this site called ‘At a Loss’ but it went missing and was archived. I have rejuvenated the cache site with permission from ‘libbysgang’ who were the original owners. It is not in the same location as the previous cache.

This cache is one of a set of caches exploring the rich heritage of the Glen. Each cache can be visited independently but there are two good walks that take in parts of the set.

A high level walk of 13 km takes in the hills surrounding the glen and is a substantial venture requiring some good navigation on pathless hills above the 500m line. It covers 7 caches of the set.

The caches are:-
GC23M4D – Calcite Puzzle
GC23B65 – Well Sheltered and Watered
GC23KEM – Battlewatch
GC23MED – Making a Loss
GC23M50 – Hanging On
GC23M52 – James Wright of Loss
GC23M4R – Quarterside
Purists may want to add the cache on the summit of Dumyat - Lost Look GCVX01 - placed by Team Incredible to complete the high level traverse.

A lower level walk of 9 km covering 5 caches is on good tracks all the way but still climbs to a height of 300m in places.

GC23M4D – Calcite Puzzle
GC23M4M – Little Jerah
GC23M50 – Hanging On
GC23M52 – James Wright of Loss
GC23M4R – Quarterside

This cache is on both walks. To continue the walk leave the ruins by the gateway just down the hill and follow a track through a gate then over the burn and on to the next cache

Well done Craigleaquestors on First to Find
All the caches are now in place for both walks.
