Major Ralph Mansfield was the Commanding Officer of H Aust Heavy Battery. The 127 men of H Battery arrived in Cairns by train on Christmas Day 1942. They were the first Heavy Gun Unit in the Cairns area during WW2. They had their Christmas Dinner at a rail siding in Cairns. They then camped briefly at Parramatta Park before moving to False Cape to choose gun locations and a suitable area for the camp located at the entrance to Cairns Harbour in tropical north Queensland.
This cache is devoted to the men who kept Cairns safe.
The cache is located at the given co-ordinates, though the cache is best hunted on a trail through the remains of WW2 at False Cape, as given below:
(1) 155mm heavy artillery turrets: S16 52.279 E145 50.931
(2) Cache Site: S16 52.306 E145 50.946
(3) Battery Observation Post: S16 52.358 E145 50.956
There is also a very small platform north of the turret on the cliffs edge that views the islands.
I have been to this spot numerous times but always by boat, landing at the beach with the large rock chair as depicted in the pictures:
S16 52.592 E145 50.819
Just behind the beach of the rock chair is an old piece of rail or road production machinery.
The cache contains only a log & pencil & is only small due to the remoteness of the cache.

**I no longer live near this location or even the same state so I cannot conduct maintenance. Anyone who lives locally to the cache and would like to adopt it feel free to contact me. Or alternatively, if a previous finder has posted maintenance issues and your heading off to find the cache I would appreciate any help as I would hate to archive this cache in such a beautiful and historical spot.
