The growing community needed a fire department.
In 1880 the Lafayette Hose company was organized using a small hand pump supplied by a bucket. Seven years later the Good Will Hook and Ladder was added. Shortly afterwards the Chemical Comapny formed. Then in 1918 the three merged into the Egg Harbor City Fire Dept.
The Fire Dept. as well as the city were aided by the creation of a privately owned water works built in 1897. This was eventually sold to the city and greatly expanded.
The cache is on the grounds of the Lafayette Hose Company. The building is original and has since housed city hall, a school, a library, museum and now the senior center.
The bell is not the original fire bell, this is located farther north on Philadelphia Ave in front of the new Fire Hall.
Standing behind gz is the city water tower, home of the infamous City Buzzards. Across the alley from the water tower is a raised circular concrete pad, this was the original city well.
