Coronado Heights is a prominent, isolated hill overlooking the
Smoky Hill river valley. It is the last of a row of erosional hills
extending to the north which are capped by the sandstone of the
Dakota Formation. It is 300 feet above the surrounding valley
floor, offering sweeping vistas of the surrounding countryside. The
eroded face of Coronado Heights reveals a panorama of geological
history as well, covering 230 million years of time. At its base
are gray and red shales that made up the floor of an ancient salt
water sea. At the top is the Dakota Sandstone, a mixture of marine,
fresh water and subtropical fossil material.
The Smoky Valley Historical Association (SVHA) parent organization
obtained the land for a park in 1919 from two pioneer Swedish farm
families. The SVHA built the walking trail and auto road to the top
along with a shelter house and flag stand in the early 1920's. The
park was deeded to Saline County in 1936 for management after the
WPA work and reverted back to the SVHA in 1988. It has been managed
by them since that time. In 1988 a special monument for Coronado
was designed and built by Lindsborg artist John Whitfield and the
Smoky Valley Historical Association and volunteers.
Coronado Heights receives its name from Francisco Vasquez de
Coronado, who visited central Kansas in 1541, looking for the
Native American community of Quivira, where he was told "trees hung
with golden bells and ... pots and pans were beaten gold." Coronado
didn't find his gold, and it is unknown if he actually ascended the
heights now named after him near Lindsborg, Kansas.

Okay on to the hunt.
You will need to explore the hill top for specific man made
objects. With my background in construction, I thought it would be
good to bring you along for some “Construction Math.
Ready?
In the Castle’s Main room, count the number of:
Windows
Overhead Beams
Columns
Inside the foyer, steps leading to the roof.
On the hill top, count the number of:
Picnic areas
Chimneys
N 38 36.8__ W 97 42. 1__
Now here is the fun part.
For the north, add the total of items counted in the Castle and
around the hill top. Add six to this for the north
For the west, subtract two from the total of your count for items
inside the Castle.
As you look for the final, PLEASE stay on the trail until the last
40 feet.
EXTRA CREDIT
I am involved with a group of cachers at home in Utah known as the
Unknown Hobos. We host 3 events a year. Each event comes with its
own coin. I will send a coin from the February 2010 event to the
first person who e-mails me though my profile, the correct answer
to the following question.
How many TOTAL man-made stairs are on the hill top. (Yes, I know, I
counted twice.)
