Cabbage Key Cache
Climb to highest point of this 100 acre island and look at the view. Useppa Island is to the northeast and Caya Costa looking north. Now turn to the south and you can see North Captiva. You are standing in the Barrier Triangle, the most beautiful part of Florida that sustained the fury of a major hurricane. This triangle has a vortex. Picture the eye of Hurricane Charlie passing right over this small piece of paradise. Think about what can withstand winds over 150MPH. This place can. You are witnessing the strength of old Florida design.
If you ponder the reason people came here to stake their claim in the 1930’s, the reason is as clear as the waters surrounding the island. The island and main house was purchased by playwright and novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart. Today, novelist Randy Wayne White frequents the island.
You are here to find one of the most unique geocache locations in Florida. Challenge yourself and see if you can find the cache without the modern technology.
Explore this place during business hours. It is a private island where the owners have permitted you to be here. Hike the trail, climb around, look at the walls and the floors as you walk in the steps of many people who traveled here to have this experience. You walk the quarter mile trail or stroll around the vernacular structures dotting the island, and look out to where you came ashore. This beautiful place, these buildings, that incredible marina building that welcomes you here with a breezeway from twin buildings on either side designed to cool the two original structures. You can feel the winds of the storm going through. It’s true, this is one of most spectacular places you will set foot on, now where could the cache be? Turn on the GPS and see.
