Hidden in my favorite Rockford Park District park, along the Kent creek.
There was a simpler time ... when making up a day pack and heading out to explore was just the thing to do. We'd pack up a couple of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches wrapped in wax paper along with a paper bag of Mrs. Fishers potatoes chips and a bottle of Yahoo, and head to the nearby park to follow the banks of Kent creek to see where it might lead us. We'd gather under the old wooden train bridge that crossed the Kent and make our way; bushwhacking where necessary, braving poisonous plants and avoiding the neighborhood dogs as much as possible. There was no final destination only the going and coming home (usually muddied and scratched up a bit), but that was exactly the adventure we'd hoped for.
