Get
in the Game! Race to 2010
Start your engines for the Race to 2010! In
celebration of our 100th Anniversary the BSA is showcasing one of
our most popular activities for Cub Scouts — and a true
Scouting icon — the Pinewood Derby.
One Amazing Race
Pinewood Derby cars representing every council will race across
America using geocaching. The cars will be Travel Bugs®, moving
from cache to cache across America. Scouts and Scouters can track
their car’s progress, read posted comments, and log the miles
it travels on Geocaching.com. The finish line? Fort A.P. Hill
in Virginia for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree! All of the
Pinewood Derby cars that arrive at the Jamboree will be displayed
in a special geocaching area in Technology Quest.
Prizes will be awarded for the Pinewood Derby cars that travel the
farthest, pass through the most hands, or have the most creative
routes. But if your car doesn’t make it to the Jamboree,
don’t worry. You’re still eligible. Geocaching.com will
log how many miles each car travels. So, we’ll know if it
went the distance — even if that distance doesn’t lead
it to Virginia. After the Jamboree, we’ll release the cars
again to continue their race … around the world.
Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!
Because it’s a race, all the councils across the country are
joining the nationwide start on Saturday, March 6, 2010. Why
March 6th? Let’s just say this won’t be the only race
where you see Scouts that day.
How Can You Take Part?
The San Diego – Imperial Council has several ways that you
can take part in this activity:
- Enter a car in the council
wide competition to represent the council or your district.
Deadline to enter cars is February 27th, 2010 at noon. Turn in cars
at the council service center along with your name, unit number,
district, and phone number. Winners will be announced Monday
March 1st, 2010. DOWNLOAD a pdf flyer about entering a car.
- Attend the start of the
race on March 6, 2010 at 10 AM. This event is
serving as the start of the race. It is a ‘Flash Mob”.
According to Wikipedia: “A flash mob is a large group of
people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual
and pointless act for a brief time, then quickly disperse.”
That means everyone will mingle about in the general location until
the start of the flash mob. At the 10 AM everyone will
gather at the designated location, sign the event log, get free
stuff, have a raffle, the cars will be handed out, the green flag
will drop and the race is on. In a matter of 10 to 15 minutes
everyone will disperse with the cars and the race to the Jamboree
will begin..
- Enter the race even if you
car is not selected. In order to do this you will need to
obtain a set of Travel Bugs® from geocaching.com or other online
location the sells Travel Bugs® (A limited number of Travel
Bugs® will be available at the flash mob event). You will need
to attach that tag to the Pinewood Derby car for the Race to 2010!
(Be sure to write down your tag number so you can track your
car.) You also have a spare tag that has the same number.
Keep that to make sure you don’t forget the number of your
car. But do not use it to launch a second car. Before
the race, National will provide the official Geocaching.com site
listing and that will be posted here as soon as it is
available. If your unit plans to enter a car notify the Get
in the Game Coordinator at Geocaching@sdicbsa.org so that
it can be added to the council race results that will be posted on
the SDIC web site after the start of the race.
- Watch the cars on the SDIC
web site and on Geocaching.com to see how they are
doing?

out.
