*** Please be aware - the wrought iron fence at the GZ has anti-vandal paint on the spikes at the top ***
The Beacon Way runs for approx. 35km from Sandwell Park Farm, W Midlands to Gentleshaw Common, Staffs. Here it passes through Walsalls' premier park, the
Arboretum. Officially opened to the public in 1874, this 200 acres of parkland was originally the southern boundary of Cannock Chase and formed part of the great medievel royal hunting grounds.
The park has been used for many activities over the years; croquet lawn, outdoor bathing, ice skating, boating, cycling etc.
The park is scattered with Victorian architechture; the boathouse, main
entrance gate, bandstand, lodge etc. The boathouse beside Hatherton Lake, now fenced off, operated until the 1980s renting wooden rowing boats by the hour. It eventually closed, like so many
things, due to safety concerns following several accidents.
Walsall Council will soon utilise a £4.7million lottery grant to
carry out a £9.3million make-over of many of the features within the park including the boathouse, the bandstand and the
lodge. Hopefully these renovations will not disturb the caches.
This is a series of three. The co-ordinates for the third and final part can be found split between parts 1 and 2.
This series can be done in conjunction with 'Walsall Arboretum', the final location
for both are close to the golf course car park and the routes merge
for a while.
This cache is a 35mm film cannister and contains the first half of the co-ordinates for part 3.
The path for this cache will be fine in summer but can be a little muddy in winter and after rain.
Even in winter the Lakeside teashop is open for warm and cold food and benches are situated all over the park.
The best parking is at the Arboretum / Golf Course car park but be aware of
the closing times. Alternative parking in the road by the entrances in Arboretum Road and Broadway North.
Thanks to Greenspace Services, Walsall Council for permission to place these caches.
