On May 2, 2000, at
approximately midnight, eastern savings time, twenty-four
satellites were ordered to allow commercial receivers to access the
full potential of the GPS signals, increasing accuracy
enormously.
On May 3rd Dave Ulmer, a
GPS enthusiast placed a bucket in the ground with various items
including videos, books, software, and a slingshot. He shared the
waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on
sci.geo.satellite-nav:
Original Stash
: N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800
Within days several
other enthusiasts used the GPS satellites to find the cache and the
sport known as Geocaching was born!
This event has
a special Icon for those who attend :
May
2nd, 2010 2pm-5pm at Black Water State Park
The
event is being held at Blackwater River State Park between 2pm and
5pm on May 2nd, 2010. There will be light snacks available as well
as some drinks but if you want anything more substantial, please
bring your own. The site does have some grills available for those
of you who wish to cook up some grub. If you want to bring
something to share with the rest of the group that would be great
but not a requirement. Towards the end of the event, we hope to be
serving up some 10 year anniversary cake for everyone to
share.
Some of the activities currently planned for the event are:
Geobingo
Pin on the Cache
Geocoin coloring contest for the kids
Geocoin/Pathtag trading for those interested (we know we will bring
our collections along)
Geocoin/Travelbug discoveries (bring the ones currently in your
cache bag to share with the rest)
and other activities as we think of them.....
There also will be a 50/50 raffle with various prizes including
pre-made caches, several unactivated geocoins, related geocaching
items, and one of the event coins. The raffle tickets are $1 each
or 6 for $5 and the money will be used to defray some of the costs
of the event (pavilion rental, supplies, food, etc)
Towards the end of the event, we will be giving people a chance at
being FTF on some pre-published caches put out specifically for the
event.
The event itself may have a special icon on your geocaching profile
for those of you attending and the hosts of the event are avid
geocoin collectors so we thought that the theme for this event
should be Icons (which is just another way to use the
letters of the word Coins) as this event contains both. Some
of the items and caches place have been done so in order to fill
out some of the icons that you have been missing in your profile.
So if you are coming to the event, it will be a one-stop place to
get that letterbox icon, webcam icon, the mega event icon, the 10
year! event icon, and others. Of course we had to cheat a little
and some of the icons are associated with coins instead of caches
but, hey, when are we going to be able to cross the country to get
the last A.P.E cache in North America. We would like you all to
take a look at your profile or someone else's and choose what is
your favorite icon (cache, geocoin or other geocaching related
icon). We would like have everyone hold up a picture of their
favorite icon when we take the group photo at 4pm. There will be
some drawing materials at hand at the event as well as some
relatively artistic people to help you with the drawing if
necessary. If you feel more comfortable finding one and printing
one with your computer please bring it to the
event.
But most of all, come have a good time
with your fellow cachers and celebrate this wonderful sport called
Geocaching!
Things may change so please refer to this page for additional
information as the time gets closer.
Thanks and hope to see you all
there!
Please leave a note if you are planning on attending: Party size
and kids ages (if attending)
This
event will be part of world wide celebration of the 10th year of
Geocaching happening during this weekend in many places around the
world. A commemorative coin is being produced which will have
unique coloration specific to the individual events. Coin
purchases($10ea) will be limited to those attending the event.
Because we need to provide the chance of those attending of
obtaining an event coin, it may be necessary to limit the amount of
coins going to any one person/group. Please bear this in mind when
requesting the number of coins to be set aside. Thank
you.
Here is
an updated photo of the Event
coins.
