Geocache Description:

Situated on the banks of an Oyster Creek overflow channel. Good walk from any nearby parking.

In 1924 developers of the Sugar Land area considered using this site as the location of the new Sugar Mill company town. The near by creek and abundant trees made the area very inviting. Unfortunately, constructions crews began to complain about the terrible smell and eerie noises coming from the wooded area north of the lake. Several residents reported seeing a large ape-like creature moving stealthily through the woods in the early morning hours. Construction on the company projected halted and was abandoned in 1926 when one worker - Richard Nelson of Richmond - had a face to face encounter with what he described as a large, man-like ape that had stepped from the edge of the woods. Its howled and made a sound that Nelson said he "would not want to hear twice in one lifetime."

The cache is hidden near a tree that a long time resident of the area claimed was sacred to Indians that lived here in the 19th century. They called the tree Asquantuna, which translates roughly as "walking bear-man." The area has never been developed due to the persistent sightings of a large, ape-like creature until the late 1970's.

Move quickly, and don't linger too long. Residents still report mysterious shadows moving in the woods in the late night hours, and unusual noises on moonlight nights. Dogs may be spooked by the area as well.
