A cute little micro "can" hidden above the high water mark. Park nearby and walk in, unless you have a boat. You can follow the easy path and get a little damp, or bushwhack your way in and try to stay a little drier. Not recommended during high tides or very rainy weather, unless you enjoy being wet - LOL!
Isthmus Slough History #2. Here lie the bones of the “Roosevelt”, whats left of her hull decaying alongside the waters of Isthmus Slough. From 1921 to 1936, the ferry Roosevelt operated between North Bend and Glasgow on toll free hourly trips. She was wooden hulled with mid-mounted side paddles. Her two cylinder steam engine generated 75 horsepower. Built in 1921 at Kruse & Banks Shipbuilding Co in North Bend, she could carry up to 19 cars. Her dimensions were 96 feet long, 20 feet wide, and she drew 10 feet of water loaded. Owned by Coos County until 1928, then by the State of Oregon, her Captain was John H. Graham. Her hull now is home to plants and birds, and her “seaworthy” days are long past. For pictures of her in operation, visit a cache near Ferry Street Park in North Bend.
