This cache celebrates the University of Georgia Redcoat Marching Band, and their new practice field. Since the band's inception in 1905, they had to share rehearsal facilities (requiring a field with football yard lines) with other organizations, namely, the UGA football team. This meant that if football practice ran over, the Redcoats had to wait. Also, with over 400 members, parking became a problem.
2009 marked the first year Redcoats got to march at their own rehearsal facility. Nestled in the back of the UGA Intramural Fields, the Redcoat Band Practice Field is a full-sized football field (sans goal posts), complete with lights, parking, and in the future, spectator stands.
I placed this cache after having marched with the Redcoats for four years — two on alto saxophone, and two on mellophone. Now I'm back for graduate school and I'm the Redcoat Photographer! You know what they say: "Once a Dawg, always a Dawg — how sweet it is!"
The field is about 200 feet away from the site of the cache, and is likely to be in use during daylight hours. If you come by for this cache during the late summer or fall, you might get to see a Redcoat rehearsal. This could be a problem due to the high volume of muggles, but hey — free entertainment!
Congrats to the FTF, Jordan Plemmons, a Redcoat Baritone (first in the log book) and BoogerHill (first log online).
Are you, or have you ever been in Redcoats? Make a note of it in your log!
