Butterfly Creek (Eastbourne) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Growly Bear: As this cache has been out of action for too long, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

A nice 45 or 90 minute walk (depending on where you start) through an easy to follow trail to Butterfly Creek. (Accuracy of GZ coordinates +/-6m).

A well developed and nicely maintained track takes you from Eastbourne to Butterfly Creek, which lies on the other side of a rather large hill. Once you reach the top of the hill (at least if you start from Muritai Park) you will see some very beautiful views of Wellington harbour. From there you will travel down the other side and alongside a stream until you reach your destination.

We walked from the Muritai Park trailhead (use coordinates PARK1) and this took us 90 minutes to reach GZ. If you start at the Kowhai Street trailhead (use coordinates PARK2) you will be looking at about 45 minutes each way. Note that the age ranges in our group was 5yrs to 60yrs and our pace was quite casual.

Butterfly Creek itself is a very nice picnic area on the edge of a creek - and no we didn't see any butterflies while placing the cache. The creek is deep enough to swim (in places) and has a very gentle current to keep the water moving. If you ever wish to see a dog smile, have a look on their face while they are paddling here after the walk in on a hot summers day.

Picnic tables are dotted amongst the trees so you can have a picnic lunch in the shade or in the sun depending on which table you choose. It is a surprisingly busy area, there were 2 other groups there while we were having lunch and we passed a lot of people on our way in and out.

At the beginning of the picnic area is a toilet (a long drop) which is off to the side, and up a fair few steps I might add...

The cache itself is a 1 litre sistema container and contains a logbook, pen and the usual trinkets. It is hidden within view of the picnic area, but you can retrieve it without being seen by prying muggle eyes at the picnic tables. Bear this in mind when you are looking so you don't draw undue attention to yourself.

So grab your togs, pack a picnic lunch and bring your four legged friends for this one.
