Back in simpler times all roads lead to the country store.
This was certainly the case for the nearby "Durliat Red and White Market" whose existence dates back to the very early years of our township.
At one time this store stood only a couple feet off the dirt roadway where Netherby Road, Montrose Road, and Schill Roads intersected.
Although the settlement of Netherby contains only a few structures today, it was once bustling with activity. This store has served as a post office, livery, and as a “buggy stop” for passengers travelling on the Canada Southern Railway.
With the increased traffic and speeds of our modern day society, it became necessary to make improvements for the expeditious flow of traffic, and to improve the safety of the intersecting roadways. The building itself has been hit by several cars over the years and now sports a concrete barrier in front of the porch to protect it from wayward drivers.
The main thoroughfare was moved North by 100 feet to connect with a newly paved section of Netherby Road and eliminated the former “T” in front of the store. A short section of the “Old Netherby Road” was maintained and on July 13th, 1990 the Niagara Falls Review proclaimed the renaming of this now defunct section of Netherby Road to Durliat Road.
