Due to official road closure during the period from December 1 to April 1, cachers entering this area may expect to hike a round trip of 15 miles and should expect to encounter deep snow over most of the route during most years. However, when the cache was installed on February 20, 2010, very little snow lay on the ground and the hike was relatively easy. Shortly thereafter, the area received its greatest snowfall of the winter, effectively closing it off to all but the most experienced showshoers and cross-country skiers. During summer months, you may only have to hike a mile or so to reach a very significant Ground Zero.
Ground Zero: 46° 00.000 122° 00.000. This is a confluence of latitude/longitude lines. There are only 23 such confluences in the state of Washington and only 1102 in the United States. You may want to take some time here to attempt to bring your GPSr down to those covetable round numbers. Depending on your unit, it may take half an hour or more as various satellites are obtained. We strongly suggest setting your unit down and waiting for it to obtain a solid signal instead of wandering about trying to get it to zero out. It's quite a thrill to see those zeros pop up on the screen!
