Geocaching is 10 years old!
A BRIEF
HISTORY
On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight,
eastern savings time, the great blue switch* controlling selective
availability was pressed. Twenty-four satellites around the globe
processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS
technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers
around the world had an instant upgrade.
The next day, a GPS enthusiast, Dave Ulmer placed the very
first cache and placed it's coordinates on the internet for others
to find. Though it wouldn't be called "geocaching" until later that
same month, clearly our game had been firmly
established.
THE EVENT
Come celebrate the 10 year anniversary of geocaching in the
pretty little village of Hampton (just 10 minutes north east of
Oshawa and close to many, many geocaches in the
woods)!
We will be meeting in the morning (around 8:30am) at the
Hampton Community Centre for a HOT breakfast spread, some
socializing and of course...prize giveaways!!! Our plan is to have ten new geocaches placed in time for
this event in some of our favourite Conservation Areas. Plus, what
would be an ELTADA event with it's own geocoin?? Once again, an
Ontario version of the 10 Years of Geocaching Geocoin will be
created and sold...we will be adding more details including
pictures as it is confirmed. For more information (A
LOT more information!), check out the event site
at: (visit
link) Check back to
that site often as we will be updating it
frequently.
NOW LOOKING FOR
AMBASSADORS! Are you a seasoned cacher
that loves to chat about geocaching? We are currently looking for
event ambassadors to share their breakfast table with newer cachers
and answer their burning questions about our favourite sport. If
you might be interested, please contact
us!
Please log your Will Attend and indicate how many of you will
be coming...we want to make sure to have enough food for everyone
and the space at the hall is limited.
We hope you will join us!
