Rail06 Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Stoke Bunnies: I was never very happy with some of the locations for this series, too close to roads, and now I've been told about a GZ full of rubbish. I think at least 2 are also missing, so time to go.

Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the above location

Why is the A3088 Cartgate Road like it is. Who would build a road with cuttings and embankments, and where did all those old bridges come from? Not only on the A3088, but extending right past Westlands and into the town centre. The road had been built over an old railway, and this is it: The Bristol & Exeter Railway was authorised by act of Parliament in 1836, following quickly on the 1835 act for construction of the Great Western Railway. Bristol merchants were anxious to secure a railway route to Exeter, which was an important commercial centre, and which had a harbour on the south coast, in the English Channel. Coastal shipping from the South coast and from continental Europe making for Bristol needed to navigate the hazardous north Cornwall coast after negotiating the waters round Land's End. Isambard Kingdom Brunel was appointed engineer, and the first 7 ft 01/4 in (2,140 mm), broad gauge, section of the line was completed to Bridgwater on 14 June, 1841, and the extension to Taunton in July 1842 - both using trains leased from the Great Western. The line was completed to Exeter and opened on 1 May 1844. The branch to Yeovil was completed in 1853, and ran from Durston, near Taunton, to Hendford. Originally broad gauge, it was rebuilt to standard gauge in 1892. The line was extended to Yeovil Pen Mill in 1857, and Yeovil Town station was built in 1861. The line was closed in 1961 by Dr Beeching, although Yeovil Town station was in use for a few years afterwards. The A3088 Cartgate link road was built over the railway in the late 1980s.

The cache is not accessible from the A3088.

At a society gathering, there was a Royal Sovereign. Nearby there was the Duke of Edinburgh talking to the Princess Royal, who left the Duke and was replaced by the Duchess of Albany. A small point, but then Princess Beatrice was left with the Black Prince. Meanwhile, in another part of the gathering, The Duke of Connaught snubbed the Duke of York, so the Duke of York left him. There was another row when the Duke of Cambridge left the Earl of Warwick, but this subdued when The Queen joined the gathering, and pointed out Princess Louise was standing next to a Dragon.
