Ha-ha

Danbury Park has been a feature of the Essex landscape for over 700 years. It was a typical medieval deer park: roughly rectangular with curved corners- an efficient shape for fencing. It had water, grassland, and wooded areas. It was stocked with fallow deer which would have grazed under trees that were by then already ancient

What is a Ha-ha?

They are quirky walls built in the 17th and 18th Century on country estates of the landed gentry. Ha-ha walls typically formed a boundary between the estate's gardens and grounds. These walls were constructed so as to be invisible from the house, ensuring a clear view across the estate. Ha-ha walls consist of a sunken stone wall-its top level with the garden, with a deep ditch on the far side: an effective barrier to livestock.

The Ha-ha at Danbury is unusual because of the way it leads right into the lower lake as a wall.
