The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands is becoming famous for its super-endurance sports events. There is the Comrades Marathon; an 80km road race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, or vice versa, there is the Dusi Canoe Marathon, (see GC23746) a duathlon (canoeing and running) down the Msinduzi River and then there’s the Midmar Mile, an open water race first contested in 1973, for all ages from 6 to 80something over one mile (1.6km). In 2009, this event was awarded a Guinness Book of Records certificate for the most participants in an open water race in the world with 13 755 taking part.
The Midmar Dam on the Umgeni River is situated near Howick. This tranquil setting provides opportunities for a wide variety of sporting activities, including water sports, cycling, walking, game viewing, angling or just lying back at one of the many picnic sites with the tantalising smell of many barbecues wafting through the air and the green hills of KwaZulu-Natal framed between water and sky.
For those with an engineering interest, the dam was built in early 1960s and is a rock fill wall with a clay core and a central concrete spillway. The concrete spillway was raised by 5m in 2002 and this almost doubled the dam’s capacity. The new spillway is of interest in that it is a labyrinthine spillway, designed to dissipate the energy of the water flowing over the dam.
There is a fee to enter the resort, but if you have a valid Rhino Card or Wild Card, you get in for free.
The cache is situated next to the road about halfway down the Midmar Mile course and looking to the right one can see the start and to the left the finish.
