Arithmancy is an ancient system of fortune-telling based on
names and numbers. The name Arithmancy is derived from two Greek
words – arithmos (meaning number) and manteia (meaning
divination). For thousands of years, arithmancy has been used to
analyze people's strengths and weaknesses, overcome obstacles, and
predict the future.
Those that have read Harry Potter will remember that Arithmancy
was Hermione Granger's favorite course at Hogwarts.
METHODOLOGY: Arithmancy uses the letters in a name or
word to calculate three single digit values: the Character
Number, the Heart Number, and the Social Number.
The first step in analyzing a name (or word) by arithmancy is to
convert it to a set of numbers. Each letter of the alphabet is
assigned a numerical value between 1 and 9, according to the
following chart:
To analyze a name, write it down, and beneath each letter enter
the corresponding numerical value. For example:

Now add up the numbers. In this case, the result is 56. If the
total is more than 9, (it usually is) it must be "reduced" to a
single digit by adding the component numbers together -- more than
once, if necessary. Thus, 56 reduces to 11 (5 + 6 = 11), which in
turn reduces to 2.
The final result (in this example, 2) is known as the
Character Number. This number is used to indicate the
general personality type of the person or word being
analyzed.
The next number calculated is the Heart Number which
represents the inner life and can indicate desires and fears
hidden from others. The Heart Number is the reduced total of all
the vowels in the name or word (for the above example, 4).
The final number calculated is the Social Number which
represents the outer facade, the face shown to the outside
world. The Social Number is the reduced total of all the consonants
in the name or word (for the example, 7).
Note: In Geo-Arithmancy, if you encounter a
number in a geo-handle just look in the table to see if that number
has a vowel in its column. If not, exclude it from Heart and
Include it in Social. (Assume Y is a consonant.)
