Remarkable Rocks

The Remarkable Rocks are one of the best known icons of Kangaroo Island. They are located in the Flinders Chase National Park, over on the western side  of  Kangaroo Island.  I would like to explain how these abstract rocks originated.

The remarkable Rocks on Kangaroo Island at  the South Coast of Australia are made of granite, which embedded into the Earth's crust during the Ordovician. At that time Kangaroo Island was part of GODWANA, the supercontinent in the southern hemisphere, which included  Australia, South America, Africa, India and Antarctica. About 150  million years ago,  Godwana began to split up into the present continents. Australia moved  northward and with it the Ordovician granite.

Step 1

Granit boulders embedded in the Earth's surface.

Start of the erosion.

Step2

Through preformed clefts and a certain proportion of easy wheathering minerals  such as feldspar and mica spherodial weathering originates.

Step 3

Continuous wind erosion in a relatively dry climate can result in such bizarre shapes, so-called TAFONI.  It is the result of wind  and quartz grains (or other mineral Grant) which act like a sand blaster.

Your tasks to log this Earthcache:

1. Which organism is responsible for the red colour on the granit boulders?

2. Estimate the hight of the "Hook Rock".

3.Pictures are welcome .
