Geocache Description:

A hopefully fairly tricky hide close to but not on the watch hut. In a park that is SHUT FROM DUSK TO 08.00. Please replace carefully as this has been muggled and don't give too much away in the logs.

The New River is a man-made waterway created in 1613 to provide fresh water for London from the River Lee. It starts near Ware in Hertfordshire and originally ended in Clerkenwell, more than 20 miles away. The watch hut dates from the 18th Century and was used by the linesman in charge of this section whose job it was to prevent swimming and fishing in the river.

In 1852, as a response to Cholera outbreaks, the Metropolis Water Act was passed requiring all water supplied in London to be filtered. The New River Company constructed reservoirs, filter beds and a pumping house at Stoke Newington and this section of the new river was enclosed in pipes. The route of the river has since been made into ornamental gardens so the section of 'river' that you see here is not the original New River.
