This cache has been archived.

Ngaambul: As there's been either no response from the cache owner, no cache to find or log to sign, or it's been a number of months since the last owner note. I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace/make available the cache sometime in the near future (next 30 days), just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the current guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it. Should you replace the cache after 30 days has passed please create a new cache listing so it can be reviewed as a new cache.

Geocache Description:

Adopted from Tablelands Cachers. Thanks guys :)

Marrangaroo 1st Tunnel was part of the origanal western line opened in March 1870, it was closed by October 1923 when the line was upgraded to a double track. This tunnel was 244m and was replaced by the new tunnel at S33°25.284 E150°06.546 which is almost 4 times the lenght at 974m.
Access in not possible due to private property.

The first in several Railway History Cachers. Where you are standing is almost mid way over the top of the tunnel.

The RAAF inspected the disused Marrangaroo tunnel on 30 April 1942 for storage purposes. On 29 June 1942 contractors commenced work. The tunnel and outside cutting held the chemical weapons that were in bomb form, mainly 250 and 30 lb bombs. Phosgene is odourless and lethal, so was stored in sheds in the rail cutting and the mustard gas was placed in the tunnel. On 23 August 1942 a special train loaded with chemical weapons, accompanied by guards and decontamination personnel, arrived at Marrangaroo.

A special thanks goes to Anywherebuthome who not only got FTF but where able to send me the correct co-ords.
