Geocache Description:

This earthcache highlights man's disrespect of geology and this amazing canyon.

Originally this area of California was on the sea floor. Eventually, fault action brought these mountains up out of the ocean. These mountains were formed during the late Jurrassic and early Cretaceous periods and were eventually pushed up through the surrounding rock by fault movement. Del Puerto Canyon was first formed when a volcanic eruption layered a layer of lava over this area of the mountains. Then most of the lava hardened into the igneous foundation of the current hills, but, a small area (where the canyon is now) didn't solidify. Eventually flowing down into the central valley leavng a small canyon behind it. Over time, creeks formed from rainfall cut the canyon even deeper. The minerals that compose this area are mainly limestone, sandstone, granite, quartz, and small amounts of gold. The area is also rich with fossil deposites from when this area was the seafloor and later times.

This cache is on public land so there is no need to cross any of the fences or, really, to leave your vehicle. Please leave nature and geology as it is.
