Helm crag know as "The lion and the Lamb" to generations
of children is one of the best known fells in the country. It is so
called because of the rocks forming part of the the summit ridge
resemble these creatures when viewed from the road below Dunmail
Raise.
The mountain itself is no biggy by
lakeland standard but whereas many larger fells fail to fully
reward the walker for the effort expended in achieving the summit,
Helm Crag rewards you in abundance. The summit is strewn with rocks
and in fact the true summit can only be reached after a short rock
climb, and is the only lakeland mountain that the legendary AW
never reached the summit of - it's true, read the book (A Pictorial
Guide to the Lakeland Fells - The Central fells).
On a clear day the views on the way to the summit are sufficient
reward for anyone.
The cache itself is a small lock and lock container and is placed a
short distance from the summit. Take care when scrambling around
the summit rocks especially if they are wet and greasy as there are
many dangerous clefts and fissures.
