Happy Birthday George Washington and Abraham Lincoln! Presidents' Day is the name of this holiday cache and it is a micro. Start here and head up the trail to grab the Valentines cache. This cache is located in the Pack Monadnock system of trails with access on Temple Rd off of Rt 123 in Sharon. Bring your own writing instrument.
The cache container is a film canister with only a log sheet. It is an easy find and is intended to be a 'parking' locater for Valentines and future caches that may be placed along this nice trail. As in the other caches in the 'holiday' series, here is a short history lesson on Presidents' Day.
George Washington was the first President of the United States and the Father of America. He was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was a farmer, surveyor, and soldier and served as an American General in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. He is known for the role he played in winning and securing the independence of America and is recognized as one of the most important figures in the history of the country. The “Whiskey Rebellion” of August 7, 1794, was a result of a federal tax on whiskey that Washington imposed. A scuffle broke out in Washington’s cabinet over the issue of a federally charted bank, this led to the establishment of the political parties. George Washington served as the first President from April 30, 1789, through March 3, 1797.
Abraham Lincoln, also known as Honest Abe, the Rail Splitter, and the Great Emancipator was the sixteenth President of the United States. He was born on February 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. His occupation was a lawyer. Lincoln opposed the expansion of slavery and assumed more power than any other president when the Civil War broke out. Lincoln had a lasting influence on the US political system by setting the precedent of executive powers during a time of national emergency. Lincoln was the president to declare that Thanksgiving is a national holiday. He served as president from March 4, 1861, until he was assassinated on April 15, 1865.
The third Monday in February is recognized as a national Holiday to celebrate the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Many state and local governments, as well as private employers, refer to the day as Presidents’ Day, while the US government refers to the day as Washington’s Birthday. The draft of the Monday Holiday Act of 1968 called for Presidents’ Day to recognize both Presidents. When the final version of the bill came out, only Washington’s Birthday was moved to the third Monday without changing its name. President Nixon issued a proclamation in 1971 to have Presidents’ Day to honor all of the US Presidents; however it did not have the force of law. The tidbits on President Washington and President Lincoln as well as presidential profiles on the other US presidents may be found at (visit link)
