Looking for Lovejoy 3 – The Price of Fish
TV Series 5; Episode 13
You are looking for a 50ml camouflaged container. There is a log book and room for small items such as path tags and small coins.
Extreme stealth will be required in the Summer!
Note: During very heavy storms, access to this part of the harbour is sometimes restricted.
There is a coin of the realm for FTF
This cache is sited near to where the Coastal Path enters/exits Mevagissey Harbour
Lovejoy has legged it after ripping off Charlie Gimbert, who has sent a gang of men to get him.
See “Lovejoy Loses It” GC241DD.
You have arrived in Mevagissey in an attempt to try and stop him leaving the country. You couldn’t reach him by phone but thought you saw him boarding a boat from the cliff path. You now need to walk round the harbour to see if it was really him.
Note: The location of this cache can also be used to solve puzzle cache GC241DD as a multi. See that cache listing for details.
Mevagissey Harbour:
"A pier for the purpose of affording shelter for the fishing boats" was first constructed by the Trewollas family, who owned the manor of Trelevan, in about 1770-3. At one time the port dealt with huge quantities of pilchards, but these unfortunately disappeared from the seas around Cornwall at the end of the 19th century.
The current harbour is built on the site of a medieval quay. The first Act of Parliament allowing the new port to be built was passed in 1774. The inner harbour, consisting of the current East and West Quays was constructed from this time. An outer harbour was added in 1888, but seriously damaged in a blizzard in 1891. The outer walls were rebuilt by 1897. The harbour was given charitable trust status in 1988.
On the way to the cache site, you will pass The Aquarium:
Mevagissey Aquarium draws some 35,000 visitors a year to its collections of local marine life. It was first opened to display the diversity of local marine life and to bridge the gap between the local fishing industry and the public. Its home is the 1897 RNLI lifeboat house, which closed in 1930 when motor lifeboats began to be used. In 2004 the Aquarium was refurbished and reopened.
You'll see various local species and appreciate the diversity of local marine wildlife. Money collected from the Mevagissey Aquarium initiative is put towards the maintenance of Mevagissey Harbour. Admission is FREE with donations welcome. Opening hours: April to September, every day, 10am - 5pm.
At the end of the harbour wall (past the cache site) is the departure point for the Fowey to Mevagissey Ferry
Winner of the Cornwall Tourism Awards in 2002. The service runs from the beginning of May till the end of September in good weather conditions. The ferry leaves from the Lighthouse Quay in Mevagissey and from the Whitehouse Quay in Fowey.
Mevagissey Ferry offers the chance to explore the beautiful Cornish coastline without getting in the car. On the way, passengers may see basking sharks, dolphins and even the occasional war ship. The crossing takes about 35 minutes, and tickets are sold onboard. Dogs are welcome. All sailings are subject to sea conditions.
The lighthouse at the end of the pier is worth a look and you can walk round the harbour wall for a great view out to sea. The lighthouse led to Mevagissey reportedly being the first town in the UK to have street lighting. In 1895, a pilchard-powered power station was built for the sole purpose of lighting the new lighthouse, but there was enough power to light the town’s streets too. In 1891 the great blizzard destroyed the pier and the lighthouse, which had to be rebuilt. This one was first lit in 1896. It is nine metres high.
This cache has been placed with the kind permission of the Harbour Master, Hugh Bowles. If you see him around the village please thank him for letting us play our game on his patch.
Lovejoy is a character from the books by Jonathan Gash
