Malta, was Originally Known As Etna. Founded in 1856 it is believed it was named for Mt. Etna in Sicily, which had erupted spectacularly several years before. About 1858, with the construction of the Galena railroad which named it's station Malta, the town changed it's name. The name is presumably taken from the Mediterranean Island of Malta*.
