Geocache Description:

This is part of a series of cache and dash placements along the B5470 between Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whaley Bridge.
This is the old route of the A6 linking London and Carlisle which was bypassed to the north in 1987.

Ignore the spelling on the Waterways sign!

The Combs valley was under the ice sheets around 14000 years ago and the floor of the valley is covered in impermeable boulder clay. This fact, no doubt, contributed to the choice of the area for the construction of a feeder reservoir for the Peak Forest Canal. Combs reservoir, the 6th largest canal feeder in the canal system covering 31 hectares, was completed around 1805. It is home to a sailing club and is a destination for anglers. The site is also an SSSI. When the water levels drop in the summer the muddy draw down zone supports a rare community of short-lived mosses and liverworts.

To the east is the gritstone escarpment of Combs Moss; to the south is Ladder Hill ; to the north Eccles Pike and to the west the Bowstones overlooking Lyme Park.

This cache can be included in the Combs series or a stand alone as you are passing. There are footpaths criss-crossing the valley and hills and good pubs to slake you thirst after a hard days caching.
