Geocache Description:

After the archived "Jelly Treats" cache by HelloMrs, we felt this park really needed to have a replacement as it is one of our family's favourite places.

This is a short simple multi; difficulty rating is more for the hide & muggle zone. The listed co-ordinates take you to a sign which will give you information to locate the final GZ in this park which is a high muggle area, with a history of previously muggled caches.

JAMES JELLIE (1889 - 1965)

James Jellie was born in the Grey Valley, educated in Greymouth, but even as a boy was attracted by the parks and gardens of Christchurch. He arrived here in 1916, bought the land he would later donate for a park, and worked it as a market garden for 20 years. He also had a poultry farm at his home in Russley Road.

Prime Minister Sid Holland (MP for Fendalton) announced the donation in a special recorded broadcast on 9 May 1956, the public reaction to which surprised Mr Jellie who said he had always wanted to give the land to the people. He required much persuasion before he agreed to allow the use of his name for the park.

The land for Jellie Park was gifted to the Crown in 1956 and vested to Waimairi County Council for development. Money for development came from Housing Corp sale of land previously set aside for recreation in the area. Land clearance and reshaping began in 1957; fill from the concurrent construction of Memorial Ave was used at the Ilam Rd end with cut from the site used at the Greers Rd end. The low lying area below the terrace was drained and its numerous creeks diverted into the Hewling Stream. A shallow lake was formed immediately below the terrace.

While land clearance was in progress, a competition for the best layout design for the park was held. The winning plan by J A Martin was approved by Mr Jellie and Prime Minister and adopted in a modified form which included a rugby field and cricket wicket by Hewlings Stream and a swimming complex on the terrace. Jellie Park was officially opened on 24 September 1960 by the County Chairman A R Blank.
