This earth cache is located in the Ruthven Nature Area. There is a small stream running between Huron Parkway and the kame, so please enter the park at the trail head. You will need to complete the tasks listed below to get credit for this earthcache.
Kames were formed when crevasses, holes, or other depressions were formed in a glacier. As melt water ran over the glacier, the water carried sand, gravel and other sediment with it. The heavier sediments (like sand, gravel, rocks) were able to settle into the depressions in the glacier while the lighter and smaller sediments (like silt and clay) were washed away with the flowing water. When the glacier melted, what was a depression was now a mound called a kame. The posted coordinates will take you to the top of a kame. You do not need to leave the trail to complete the tasks.
To get credit for this earthcache please email me the following (do not include in log):
1. At the posted coordinates, please closely examine the soil of the kame. If there is snow you will need to dig through it. What is the soil comprised of (i.e. clay, silt, sand, gravel, rocks, etc.)?
2. At the posted coordinates, take a picture and post with your log.
3. What is the difference in elevation between the posted coordinates (N 42° 16.732 W 083° 41.831 ) and the kame bottom waypoint (N 42° 16.671 W 083° 41.808)? Or how high is the kame? If your GPS has an altimeter, email me the difference. If not, you may use another method to determine the height as long as you indicate what method you used (and there are dozens of ways). You may post what method you used in your log as long as you do not indicate the answer.
Thanks for visiting.
