Geocache Description:

It's always sad to see a dying town, especially one with this much railroad history. About 3/4 of a mile south of this cache you will see a large granite marker along the railroad tracks painted "100" For a few years I worked for the Maine Central Railroad and Burnham is what we called "Halfway" It is 200 miles from the MCR's start in Mattawaumkeag, Maine (where it connects to the Canadian American railroad) to Rigby yard in South Portland, (the traditional begining of the Boston and Maine railroad) The 100 mile marker represents the halfway point. Train buffs that listen to the train dispatcher hear that symbol called out everyday. Railroads have thier own language and I would ask a train crew where they were and hear the reply "Oh about 5 miles east of halfway". I knew where they were, even though they didn't mention a town, and the tracks run north to south. Burnham is also the northern terminus of the old Belfast and Moosehead Lake railroad. Most of that line is close to being abandoned, but in Unity they still have a roundhouse, a few engines and cars and still run excursion trains. I'm sure that a B&ML train has not connected to the Maine Central (or Guilford, or Pan Am Railways or whatever they are calling it these days) in the past decade. The cache is an easy find with plenty of parking. Be stealthy!
