Geocache Description:

History abounds here as you step back in time to Totness, Upper Canada, named and established in 1845 by the Denstedt Family from Grossengottern, Germany. Their first log cabin in the deep forest and swamp of Ellice Township was so isolated and lonely that they called their location Totness, meaning “Death-ness” in German. The village name later changed to Wartburg, in honour of a German castle made famous by Martin Luther.

Visit this quiet hamlet near Stratford in search of our latest cache, a mini camo container (nut and bolt style) which is just big enough for a log sheet and an unusual FTF prize which can be spent or kept as a souvenir. Small TB’s and geo-coins can fit into this container. Don’t forget to bring your pencil, it’s a quick park and grab cache, just a few feet and inches away from the marked and unmarked graves of those first Denstedt settlers. If you find Mary Denstedt’s marker, you are close to the cache. Mary was the first family member born in the New World in 1853.
