Help clean the "Hocquaun" River
East Hartford's Hockanum River Commision is very eager for some help to clean along river.
Just downstream from Manchester, CT's landfill the East Hartford Landfill sits. Needless to say, garbage finds it way out of the landfills and floats downstream or flies west, through East Hartford, towards the Connecticut River.
As the snow melts and areas that need attention are identified, by the town committee, a list will be created of places for us to clean. We could clean all the way to the mouth of Hockanum River at the Connecticut River and Two Rivers Middle Magnet School.
Bring a pair of work gloves and any other tools (metal rake, hoe...) that you think you might need. Trash bags will be provided. Bring a camera to document your work and the beauty of the river.
If you are a paddler, bring your canoe or kayak and clean from the river. Depending on the areas that need to be cleaned, people may want or need to park at other trail heads to access those areas. Parking coordinates will be provided.
The event coordinates, listed above, will bring you to a small covered picnic area in Martin Park, off of Burnside Avenue in East Hartford. The park entrance is across the street from the KFC franchise, on Burnside Ave at the southern end of the "S" curve..
We will begin at 9am with coffee and donuts to give us energy for a morning or day full of hiking or paddling and lots of trash pick up.
We will have a raffle and then choose where we will CITO before heading out for some community service. By noon we should all be out enjoying the mighty Hockanum and finding all of Bubba's (and other hiders) geocaches.
