Geocache Description:

The area of the Rural City of Benalla covers the township of Benalla and the communities of Baddaginnie, Devenish, Goorambat, Swanpool, Tatong, Thoona, and Winton.

The Rural City comprises 235,059 hectares covering 41 localities and has a population of 14,000 with 9,000 people living in the Benalla urban area.

At approximately 0644 Eastern Standard Time on 2 June 2006 the crew of Interail freight service 5MB7 reported that their train had derailed while traversing the No. 3 points located at the Melbourne end of the Benalla crossing loop.

Both locomotives derailed along with 19 wagons. Two track machines stabled within the cripple road adjacent the crossing loop were heavily damaged along with the nearby Victorian Railway Institute Hall which sustained severe structural damage. There were no serious injuries as a result of the collision.

The investigation found that the driver of train 5MB7 had probably failed to correctly interpret and respond to signal ES6377. As a result he was unable to slow the train to a safe speed when traversing No. 3 points located at Melbourne end of the Benalla crossing loop.

At the time of the derailment some close relatives of ours were thinking of getting up to go to work. They live only about 100 metres from the crash site and so on that morning they were rudely brought out of their drowsiness by an almighty crash.

With some presence of mind they grabbed a camera and raced out the door and up the road. What they arrived to was a scene of devastation. Unfortunately the night photos do not show very much detail, however repeated below is just a small selection of the photos that were taken as soon as it was light.

There are some more photos in The Gallery section on the derailment.

Whereas before the derailment there was a local hall used by the community, now there is an uncleared block of dirt which is used as a rubbish dump by some local residents. This whole area seems now neglected by the local shire and all other parties concerned and it is an eyesore to the local residents.

Whilst there just contemplate what could have happened if the train had been going a lot faster, given the close proximity to some of the houses nearby.

The cache is a painted eclipse container with logbook, pencil and sharpener. Safety message: There is no need to go near the active railway line. Please supervise kids in this area.
