Geocache Description:

Collingbourne Wood is an outlier of Savernake Forest and along with West Wood is part of Marlborough woods. All are old woods which are predominantly broadleaf and in particular beech. The Forestry Commission has a long-term lease on this woodland.

Roe, Muntjac, Fallow and the odd Red deer can be seen in the forest. Dormice, Woodmice and Yellow necked mice all inhabit the local area as well as badgers and foxes. There are also thirteen species of bat in or within one mile of the forest.

There is a good variety of birds to be found in the forest. Birds of prey include the Red Kite, Hobby, Buzzard, Barn Owl, Tawny owl and Little Owl. Nightjar, Crossbills, Ravens, Woodcock, Greater Spotted and Green Woodpeckers can be heard or seen in the woods.

Reptiles comprise of Adders, Slow Worms and the Common Lizard. Butterflies such as the Brown Hairstreak, Whiteletter Hairstreak, White Admiral, Purple Emperor, Purple Hairstreak, Small and Large Green Veined Whites are present, plus many more common species.

This is one of our favourite local woods to exercise our dogs and is normally quiet with few other walkers.

Parking is available at the end of a track where it meets the road (Crawlboys Lane), or further down the track by the Forestry Commission sign at N 51 15.859 W 001 37.094. The latter will give a walk of about 3.5 miles. You can drive and park further down the track at N 51 16.399 W 001 36.763 which shortens the walk to about 2.5 miles.

Pleas note that distances are very approximate as there are many tracks that can be followed through the woods.

You can get to the cache along reasonable paths, but some are rutted, sloping and can be very muddy and wet.

Cache placed with the kind permission of Forestry Commission.
