The history of geocaching tells the story of how this amazing game came into being. From the first geocache hidden on 3rd May 2000, the game has grown to about 1,000,000 active geocaches worldwide, and an estimated 3-4 million geocachers who write about 2 million logs a month!!

The first geocache in South Africa was hidden on 14th January 2001 GCZA01 by GPSFrodo. It was only found once, on 17th January 2001, by Jors who is still active today, and a keen FTF hunter. After more than eight years, Jors eventually placed his first hide GCZA01.2 on 22nd May 2009, which is hidden close to the location of the first SA geocache, and is a tribute to it. We're honoured to have met Jors, and even more honoured that he was first to find our cache Under the Over which is our most challenging hide.

The oldest surviving geocache in SA is Sentinel View. This was the second geocache in the country, hidden on 18th January 2001 by Prof Charles Merry. It's still going strong, with the original container and logbook, and is a superb cache with amazing views over Hout Bay and Chapmans Peak drive in the Western Cape.

The first geocache placed in Mpumalanga province is Eucaliptus near Piet Retief (which is still active) and was placed by hosta who is also still active today, and is the fittest and most agile pensioner we've ever met!!

When we started geocaching in 2005, there were no active geocachers in our local area, and only 17 geocaches within 160 kms of our home, of which about half were in neighbouring Swaziland. We set out to try to find them, which we did, and then we started hiding caches. Our first cache hides were quite unprofessional, but nevertheless they got found, and we can clearly remember the WOW we had when our first cache was found!! Our first 3 hides (on 5th November 2005) were Old Joe, Mauchsberg, and Devil's Knuckles, which are all still going strong.

Currently there are about 450 active caches in Mpumalanga, and as one of the hosts for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, we look forward to many overseas finds on local caches shortly after this event.

Long live Geocaching.com!!
